Fredric Aasbo to compete in Canada on Labour Day weekend

LOS ANGELES, California (September 1, 2015) – Fredric Aasbo and the Rockstar Energy Drink / Hankook Tire Scion tC will compete for the first time in Canada this weekend at the Formula Drift World Championship event at Autodrome Saint-Eustache near Montreal.

Aasbo, who is currently leading the points in the U.S. Formula Drift Championship as well as the Formula Drift World Championship, made a last-minute decision to enter the event.

“We have heard so many great things about the Montreal event that we knew we couldn’t miss it,” said Aasbo. “The Rockstar Energy Drink / Hankook Tire Scion tC has never been outside of the United States before and we’re grateful to our partners for their support in making it happen.”

Although the Norwegian Aasbo frequently travels to events at tracks around the world, including regular stops in Europe and Asia, it is his first time competing in Canada.

The Papadakis Racing team, based in Los Angeles, owns and operates the Rockstar Energy Drink / Hankook Tire Scion tC. Team owner Stephan Papadakis said he is excited to campaign an event north of the border this season.

“We expect the event to be a real highlight for us and we’re looking forward to competing at a new venue,” said Papadakis. “We can’t think of a better way to close out the summer than to spend Labour Day competing in Canada.”

To mark the occasion, the team is offering a discount on its new “Formula for Drift” T-shirts. Canadian fans can get $5 off at http://teespring.com/Papadakis?pr=CANADA

The Formula Drift Canada event is the eighth of 10 rounds in the Formula Drift World Championship. Held Sunday and Monday of the Labour Day long weekend (September 6 – 7) the event is expected to draw some 10,000 fans to the Autodrome Saint-Eustache on the outskirts of Montreal. Last year’s demonstration event at the venue saw a sell-out crowd. Some ticket packages are already sold out and organizers are making arrangements to bring in extra grandstand seating to accommodate fans.

Known for his flat-out style, Aasbo has achieved 60-plus podium finishes on three continents over the past nine years of competition. He finished the 2014 Formula Drift championship in the runner-up position and has returned to Papadakis Racing in 2015 for his sixth season.

He made his U.S. debut at a global drifting invitational in 2008 and turned heads as the winner of the 2010 Formula Drift Rookie of the Year title. Since then, he has charged through the drifting ranks around the world and is both a fan favorite and championship contender.

Originally from Ski, Norway, Aasbo splits his time between his native country and Southern California. He runs a full international campaign, competing stateside in Formula Drift as well as in select events worldwide in Europe and in Asia.

Drifting is a high-skill, high-powered motorsport with an emphasis on car control skill. Drivers compete in knockout heats on a closed course, sliding sideways in trials judged on speed and style. With origins in Japan, it is one of the fastest growing forms of motorsport in the world.

ABOUT PAPADAKIS RACING
Team owner Stephan Papadakis is a legend of sport-compact racing who began building his reputation in the 1990s with the first front-wheel-drive, tube-chassis drag car in the U.S.

The team earned multiple records and championships in the discipline, turning in elapsed times and trap speeds previously thought unattainable in front-drive drag cars. Papadakis’ successes in front-wheel drive were matched by his efforts in rear-wheel drive when he campaigned a Civic that became only the fifth car to join the NHRA’s Sport Compact 200 MPH club.

The Papadakis Racing team began drifting in 2005 and has shown impressive results in seven years of Formula Drift competition, earning two championship titles with driver Tanner Foust (2007, 2008). The team finished in the runner-up position in the 2014 championship with driver Fredric Aasbo. The Rockstar Energy Drink / Hankook Tire Scion tC is the team’s latest competition build.
