Fredric Aasbo wins Formula Drift in Orlando

ORLANDO, Florida (April 30, 2017) – Rockstar Energy Drink driver Fredric Aasbo earned the first Formula Drift win for the brand-new Rockstar Energy Drink / Nexen Tire Toyota Corolla iM on Saturday in Orlando.

“Starting a season with a new car always feels like a gamble because there’s a learning curve for the driver and the team. But we proved to everyone today that our Rockstar Energy Drink / Nexen Tire Toyota Corolla iM is a force to be reckoned with in this series.” said Aasbo. “All credit is due to our team and our partners. This is an amazing feeling.”

The win puts Aasbo into the points lead after two rounds in the championship. It is his second victory in two years at Formula Drift in Orlando.

The event took place on a challenging banked track built into the Orlando Speed World oval. It featured a high-banked, high-speed right-hand first turn, tricky power and transition zone, and a long sweeping left-hander that produced dramatic tandem battles with exciting wall-riding slides and plenty of smoke. The banked track required full commitment and forced drivers to manage bumps that unsettled the car from bank to the infield and into Turn 2.

Aasbo started the weekend strong, earning the No. 2 qualifying position with a high score of 93 to bypass opening round competition and secure a Bye Run directly into the Round of 16. In his first head-to-head match, he advanced past Matt Field, and fought past Alec Hohnadell in the Great 8.

Next, he met 2010 series champion Vaughn Gittin Jr. in the highlight battle of the event. “JR is one of the titans of the sport and I knew I had to put everything on the line in my chase run to stay on his door from start to finish,” said Aasbo. “Taking down the Mustang with our new Rockstar Energy Drink / Nexen Tire Toyota Corolla iM was absolutely a career highlight.”

For the final battle of the weekend, Aasbo faced down 2013 series champion Michael Essa to claim the win.

Following this weekend’s race, Aasbo will make his way to Mississippi to visit the plant where the Toyota Corolla is manufactured, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Mississippi, Inc. (TMMMS) in Blue Springs. The next round of Formula Drift competition takes place May 12-13 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Drifting is a high-skill, high-powered motorsport with an emphasis on car control skill. Drivers compete in knockout heats on a closed course, sliding sideways in trials judged on speed and style. With origins in Japan, it is one of the fastest growing forms of motorsport in the world.

In 2017, the series again offers live and on-demand online coverage on the Formula Drift Livestream, its widely viewed online broadcast. Through a new relationship with Motorsport Network, fans can turn to Motorsport.com and Motor1.com for exclusive content. Formula Drift also returns this season to CBS Sports Network for 20 half-hour television programs. The fast-paced action featuring bracketed head-to-head match-ups anchors the coverage.
