Podium in Seattle for Rockstar Energy Drink / Nexen Tire Toyota Corolla iM

MONROE, Washington (August 6, 2017) – Fredric Aasbo scored a second-place finish in the Rockstar Energy Drink / Nexen Tire Toyota Corolla iM on Saturday, a hard-fought result in an evening of exciting sideways duels that saw the best drift drivers in the world face off in the Pacific Northwest.

“This track is one of the hardest in the series and it takes everything you have,” said Aasbo. “There’s no easy battle and your opening round battles in the Top 32 are as tough as your finals. It’s really a testament to how this sport has grown and how good the drivers and cars have become.”

Fans who packed standing-room-only into the popular Seattle area track were treated to many memorable matches, including the highlight finale as this season’s championship leaders met in the last pairing of the night.

With the event victory on the line, Aasbo and rival James Deane went all out. The pair slid door-to-door at top speed, dragging their bumpers along the wall of the banked oval and snapping through the tight transitions of the tricky Evergreen Speedway course in tandem.

“That was raw, full commitment drifting and some of the most fun I’ve had behind the wheel in a really long time,” said Aasbo. “Having an opponent like James inspires me and brings out my best driving and I know we put on a great show for the fans.”

The competition was so close that judges called for a One More Time rematch and ultimately delivered a split decision to award second place to Aasbo. The 2015 series champion is currently second in the points and fighting for the title with two rounds remaining in the season. Manufacturer partner Toyota leads the Auto Cup.

Team owner Stephan Papadakis said the crew is working hard to continue the evolution of the Rockstar Energy Drink / Nexen Tire Toyota Corolla iM. The car debuted in April at the 2017 season opener and has achieved two wins and a second place result in six rounds of competition.

“It’s fantastic to see our brand new Rockstar Energy Drink / Nexen Tire Toyota Corolla iM so competitive that there’s a one-more-time battle in the finale,” said Papadakis. “To battle like that right down to the wire against a chassis that’s been in development for this sport for 25 years shows how much potential our car has and we’re going to keep pushing all the way to the top.”

Drifting is a high-skill, high-powered motorsport with an emphasis on car control skill. Drivers compete in knockout heats on a closed course, sliding sideways in trials judged on speed and style. With origins in Japan, it is one of the fastest growing forms of motorsport in the world.

In 2017, the series again offers live and on-demand online coverage on the Formula Drift Livestream, its widely viewed online broadcast. Through a new relationship with Motorsport Network, fans can turn to Motorsport.com and Motor1.com for exclusive content. Formula Drift also returns this season to CBS Sports Network for 20 half-hour television programs. The fast-paced action featuring bracketed head-to-head match-ups anchors the coverage.

Championship action resumes in Fort Worth, Texas, September 8-9, and wraps up with a hometown event for Papadakis Racing at Irwindale Speedway October 13 and 14.
